Thomas Massie was commissioned a captain in the 6th Virginia Regiment in March 1776, promoted to major in the 11th Virginia Regiment in February 1778, transferred to the 2nd Virginia Regiment in September 1778, and resigned June 1779. Son of William and Martha Macon Massie, he married Sarah Cooke in 1781. After the revolutionary war he received over 5,000 acres of land in Ohio and Kentucky for his service.
